Social Influence by Demand

Explain Social Influence by Demand

Social influence by demand refers to the act of conforming to the pressure exerted by a group or an individual, even when it goes against one's own beliefs or opinions. This pressure can be either explicit (e.g., threats or direct commands) or implicit (e.g., fear of social rejection).

Types of Social Influence by Demand:

  • Conformity:
    • It is the tendency to behave in accordance with social norms or group expectations.
    • Example: If a group of friends follows a particular fashion trend, an individual may adopt the same style to fit in.
  • Obedience:
    • It is the tendency to comply with the orders of an authority figure.
    • Example: An employee may follow incorrect instructions given by their superior.

Examples of Social Influence by Demand:

  • Politics: Political leaders may pressure their followers to vote in a certain way.
  • Peer Pressure: Teenagers may engage in risky behaviors due to peer influence.

Milgram Experiment:

  • In this experiment, participants were willing to inflict pain on others when instructed by an authority figure.
  • It raises deep questions about human behavior and how we respond to authority.

Positive Effects of Social Influence by Demand:

  • Maintaining Social Harmony:
    • When people behave respectfully within a community, peace and harmony prevail.
  • Encouraging Cooperation:
    • Group pressure can motivate members to work together toward common goals.
  • Enforcing Laws and Rules:
    • Pressure to follow traffic rules helps reduce accidents.

Negative Effects of Social Influence by Demand:

  • Restricting Individual Freedom:
    • People may be forced to act against their beliefs, limiting personal freedom.
  • Leading to Poor Decisions:
    • Under pressure, individuals may be unable to think logically, resulting in bad decisions.
  • Encouraging Violence:
    • Intense pressure can lead people to act aggressively.
    • Example: Group conflicts or wars may arise due to extreme pressure.
  • Affecting Mental Health:
    • Excessive pressure can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Being aware of social influence by demand helps individuals think independently and make informed decisions.
